Mr Kambel Shullai, a school drop out who went on to bag the National Innovator award for inventing an eco-friendly crematorium, has passed away, family sources said today.
Mr Shullai, 73, died at the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences here after a prolonged illness on Saturday.
He is survived by his wife and daughter.
The low cost environment-friendly crematorium designed by Mr Shullai is a long structure which is open at one end and connected to a 36 feet high chimney at the other end, official sources said.
The chimney has a cover that can be operated from outside for controlling the intensity of the flames inside the crematorium which needs less firewood.
Mr Shullai received three awards for his innovation, the Third National Grassroot Technological Innovations and Traditional Knowledge Award in 2005, the People’s Parliament Awards of the People’s Grassroot Democracy Council and the Harmony Silver Awards 2008.
The Sein Raij Niamtre, which is using the crematorium designed by Mr Shullai has condoled his death.
Mr Shullai’s cremation will be held at the Khimusniang Crematorium at Jowai in Jaintia Hills district tomorrow.
