‘Khathakali', said to be Asia's biggest kite, flew over Dubai at the first international Kite festival which saw the participation of teams from India, Kuwait and the US.

Recorded in the Limca book of records, the kite was part of the festival in which international kite teams participated, flying colourful theme-based kites dotting the sky with vivid and bright creations here on Friday.

Exhibiting their colourful and unique kites, Gomberg Kites Production from the US, Team Mangalore from India and Buhamad Kite Team from Kuwait flew their massive kites showing off their skills while general crowd was also participating in the kite flying with their own kites.

Team Mangalore, the owners of ‘Khathakali', said they incorporated dance forms for a distinctive look.

“It's very important to get children outdoors,” said B. Sarvesh Rao, a founder member who runs a motor workshop in southern India and designs kites as a hobby.

“Apart from being fun, flying kites helps improve their skills, gets them away from computer games and TV. We make kites that can be recognised as culturally different.”

The Kite making workshop, which was also conducted at the venue, attracted lots of crowd followed by a stage performance by children from the Dubai Centre for Special Needs.

The crowd was entertained by Dubai Drums while the Camel, Horse riding and Dune Buggies were the fun activities that attracted families.

Everyone flying their kites took part in a kite fight competition and the last kite standing alone was given exciting prizes.

Kite experts gave away tips and tricks to the participants and taught kids to make and fly their very own kites.
