F1 racing is all geared to scorch the Indian track this October, with a record 1,000 tickets selling in less than two hours of online sales opening on Saturday.

This has happened despite tickets being priced between Rs 2,500 and Rs 35,000 each.

The three-day first Formula 1 Airtel Grand Prix of India kicks off on October 28 at the Buddh International Circuit, located near Greater Noida.

The Saturday sales helped Jaypee Sports International Limited clock Rs 1.3 crore within the first six hours, translating into sales of 2,500 tickets. The company is eyeing people from all income classes for the races.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is reported to have booked two of the 55 corporate boxes that can each seat 30 people. Airtel and Essar are also said to have booked some of these corporate boxes.

“The total seating capacity for the event is one lakh and the company hopes to earn Rs 90 crore if the event is fully sold. The company will be increasing the capacity to 1.2 lakh subsequently,” a company spokesperson told Business Line . “We are hopeful of achieving a full house ten days into the booking. In the second phase, we will extend our sales network to metropolitan outlets,” Mr Sameer Gaur, Managing Director and CEO, Jaypee Sports, told reporters here.

Narain Karthikeyan will be in the grid this October, though Karun Chandok's participation is yet to be confirmed.
