There are stories about poor, unwanted Indian girls that one reads and hears almost every other day, and eventually forgets. But some stories stay with us, to inspire us and keep that little spark of hope aglow.

Seven of these real stories, written by seven women personalities from varied fields, such as actors, artistes and TV stars, were released as a book by Plan India, a non-Governmental organisation, and publishing firm Random House, here on Friday.

The book, Because I am a Girl – Seven Girls, Seven Lives , was released by film director Govind Nihalani, who is also Chairman of Plan India. Speaking at the release function, Nihalani said the book was a collection of seven “mentally stimulating” stories of young Indian women who were empowered through right knowledge and guidance through Plan India's outreach programmes.

There is one by Anjum Hasan, who visited a village in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, where young girls are forced to become sex workers. Another one is by television star Pooja Bedi, who travelled to Lucknow and met a woman who got an ultrasound done but decided against killing her unborn girl.

Shahana Goswami, another actress, writes about a young school drop-out who has done a beautician's course, and plans to set up her own parlour and Namrita Bachchan tells the story of a young girl who sells vegetables in the male-dominated Govindpuri vegetable market in Delhi during the wee hours of the morning and then learns to read and write during the day.

The book also features stories by Meenakshi Reddy Madhavan, Nafisa Ali Sodhi and Aditi Rao Hydari, says a Plan India release.

Nihalani said Plan India had been working with communities in 11 States and this collection was about seven girls from different regions who fought with their situation and empowered themselves.
