Support for the fast unto-death being undertaken by Gandhian and social activist Anna Hazare to protest against corruption is gathering momentum.

On Friday, leaders of the Indian business community and online support poured for the protest being undertaken by Hazare.

Rahul Bajaj, Chairman, Bajaj Auto and Member of Parliament; and Adi Godrej, Chairman of the Godrej Group, were among those who supported Hazare's cause.

“We support any such movement by anybody to reduce corruption soon,” said Bajaj. He added that something needed to be done,

The Chairman of Godrej Group pointed out that corporate India does support the cause being taken up by Hazare.

Welcoming the Hazare initiative, Dr Pawan Goenka, President - Automotive and Farm Sector, Mahindra and Mahindra, said, “Corruption is a two-way process. there is a giver and a taker. And both are equally responsible for spreading it. Hence, we should even desist from being part of it".

Delhi Metro chief E. Sreedharan also pledged his support to Hazare's campaign.

Meanwhile, online support for the veteran social activist continued to gather steam, with thousands of Facebook messages and tweets pledging support to his anti-corruption crusade.

An online petition by Avaaz.org – a community which promotes activism on pressing global and national issues raging from climate change to human rights – has urged netizens to stand with one voice to “fight corruption that is poisoning our political system”.

“We stand with Anna Hazare. We call on you to endorse the Jan Lokpal Bill and act urgently to implement effective measures to tackle corruption. We want a new era of corruption-free politics in our country,” reads its online petition to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Avaaz.org claims to have garnered 3.3 lakh sign-ups on this petition within a day. Social networking sites are flooded with messages rooting for the 73-year-old Gandhian.

A Facebook community page ‘Join Anna Hazare's fast to bring the Jan Lokpal Bill' has drawn over 20,000 supporters, while a cause to ‘Support Anna Hazare against corruption' has over 40,000 members.
