V Kane Williamson, New Zealand star cricketer and captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad in Indian Premier League, is pleased with the progress his team has thus far made in the tournament and hopes to do well in the second half.

Speaking to BusinessLine on the sidelines of the Japanese sports gear store Asics, which he visited along with Tom Moody, former Australian cricketer and Coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Williamson said, “We take one game at a time and try to give our best. Every game is big. It has worked well so far for the team. We hope to do well in the second half too”. “I like the talent in the country, a number of young players are doing very well. It has been a great experience to watch. This is an exciting phase for cricket in India,” he said.

On the format that favours batsmen , he said “Bowlers have played a big role in winning IPL matches and will continue to do so. That is the beauty of the game; the batsmen and bowlers take their turns to dominate.”

“Sunrisers’ bowlers have been performing really well. There have been some injuries but have come back to form. They had to bowl with great skill to try and keep the scores low.”

Skill level

“In ranking, India is either No 1 or 2 in all the formats. Considering the skill level, India is amongst the best in the world. IPL is providing a great avenue and exposure for youngsters. It is great to be a part of this sport in the country,” he said. On their star batsmen David Warner, Tom Moody said, “The loss of David Warner is big. The loss has been two fold — both as a captain and batsman. Disappointed that he is not involved in the campaign this year. We have quickly moved on and trying to deliver as a team.”

“IPL standard is high. There is talent. It is exciting to watch youngsters play,” Moody said.

While for Williamson, Sachin Tendulkar is the best Indian cricketer, it is MS Dhoni for Tom Moody.
