Fifty-three per cent of people sleep late due to either watching shows on television or browsing social media on hand-held and other gadgets, a survey on sleep patterns, conducted by Century Mattress and Neilsen has found.

Work- or finance-related issues are also a significant deterrent to sleep; they keep 18 per cent of people awake at night. Only 20 per cent sleep before 10 pm on weekdays and 5 per cent on weekends.

The Survey, titled ‘In Search of Better Sleep’, is based on a sample size of 1,524 people across 10 cities in the country.

Sleep pattern

About 54 per cent of people said that on weekdays they sleep between 10 pm and 11 pm, whereas on weekends, only 25 per cent are able to sleep within this time-frame.

Most (43 per cent) wake up between 5 am and 6 am on weekdays, whereas during weekends, 31 per cent wake up between 7 am and 8 am. And, 68 per cent said they wake up during their sleep at least 1-2 times.

Long travel durations, work load and fewer hours of sleep make at least 37 per cent of people sleepy at least for 1-3 days a week, whereas 10 per cent feel sleepy every day on their way to or from work.

Those surveyed said their quality of sleep could be improved by regular sleeping hours, a better-quality mattress, and avoidance of gadgets before sleep.

Uttam Malani, Executive Director – Century Mattresses, said: “Through this survey, we intended to bring to everyone’s notice that gradually, each one of us is getting impacted by the new-age lifestyle, which is depriving us of quality sleep.”
