With a 12.37 per cent growth in Indian travellers, India has become the No 2 tourist-source market for Oman.

In 2018, around 3,57,147 Indians visited the country compared with 3,17, 844 in 2017.

“Several initiatives have contributed to the success, including the launch of electronic visa, direct-flight connectivity from various cities in India and opening of a new passenger terminal at the Muscat International Airport,” said Lubaina Sheerazi, India Representative, Ministry of Tourism, Oman.

A strategy developed by Oman’s Ministry of Tourism foresees at least 11.7 million international and domestic tourists by 2040, triggered by domestic and international investments into the sector of around Omani Riyal (OMR) 20 billion, over a period, said the statement. As part of its 2040 strategy, the ministry is taking major steps to develop and promote a clutch of destinations across Oman. The goal is to encourage extended visits and greater engagement with the country’s culture and natural sites, she added.

The ministry is also enhancing the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) tourism component.

Oman Air, the national carrier, offers direct flights to major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Kochi, Goa, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram.
