Recently appointed the Chairman of CII Gujarat State council, Mr Atul Garg says that his prime focus right now is skill development, along with the better corporate governance standards.
“The priorities will be on how do we increase the employability of the people and upgrade the required skills, such that they are more employable,” he says.
Mr Garg, who was earlier Vice-Chairman of the CII Gujarat State Council last year, is also Chief Operating Officer, InteQ, IT Services (India).
“We are also working at improving corporate governance, transparency and competitiveness, upgrading technology so that they (local units) can be global layers in the region. We will be working with government and administration for this.”
SME development
Another area of focus for the CII Gujarat Council is the development of the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) sector. The SME sector is Gujarat, according to Mr Garg, is a significant contributor to employment generation. “SMEs are growing in number. They already have a significant presence in Gujarat from the point of view that they are the larger employers. The large manufacturing industries' direct employment is much less than that of the SMEs put together. They maybe smaller contributors to GDP numbers, but are high on employment numbers.”
Mr Garg said that the focus of the CII would also be on bringing about greater interaction of the industry with the government.
