Living in close harmony with cows, goats and poultry, Saheeda Bano is well-known for her spunk in Bhawrasa village of Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas district. A midwife for 30 years, she is sought after despite being from the manual scavenging Hela community. “They used to pay me ₹800 at the Community Health Centre. I would do deliveries and take difficult cases to the district hospital. But for the past two years there is no payment for my work, and no doctor comes here either. I earn whatever each family offers as I can’t possibly ditch women in their time of greatest need,” she says.
