The International Olympic Committee says there is no move by India to boycott the London Olympics over the host city’s sponsorship deal with Dow Chemical Co.
Dow’s sponsorship has come under scrutiny in Britain and India because of the American company’s connection with the Bhopal disaster.
An estimated 15,000 people died and tens of thousands were maimed when poisonous gas leaked from the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal in central India in 1984. Dow bought Union Carbide in 2001 but denies responsibility for Carbide’s Bhopal liabilities.
Some British media reported today that the Indian Olympic Association will vote on a possible boycott on December 5.
The IOC says it has seen reports that some Indian athletes have raised concerns about Dow’s sponsorship, but adds that “reports of a boycott of the Games are not accurate.”
