Skin Essentials in Mumbai offers advanced skincare services such as laser hair removal and skin rejuvenation treatments. Dr Rohini Wadhwani, Cosmetologist and Medical Director of the clinic, explains the range of treatments available across age groups, and several remedies for different skin types that can be prepared right at home.

As we age, our skin gradually loses its elasticity and moisture, leaving a dull and flaky complexion. But the signs of ageing can be delayed by following a good skincare regimen right from your 20s.

Skin in the 20s

The skin in the early 20s might carry forward the high oil production of teen years, but as you approach the late 20s, signs of dryness may start appearing. As elasticity, blood circulation and skin tone are very good at this age, daily cleansing, toning, moisturising, and weekly exfoliation should suffice. Treatments available:

Deep-cleansing — Recommended every four to six weeks and suited for oily, acne-prone skin. The skin is nourished using masks containing evening primrose and rosemary leaf oil.

Acne reduction — A combination of treatments are prescribed, along with a home-care routine.

Micro-dermabrasion (skin polishing) — This procedure uses a controlled spray of fine crystals to remove the outer layer of the skin and reveal the younger, tighter and more radiant skin beneath. It is ideal to treat skin blemishes, acne, scars, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles present on the face, neck, shoulders, chest, stomach, back and legs.

Skin nourishment — This treatment includes deep-cleansing using a nourishing gel and cream that leaves skin softer, smoother and hydrated. It is especially recommended for those showing signs of dryness.

Skin in the 30s

The skin around the eyes, mouth and in the neck area is very thin and the first signs of ageing appear here in the early 30s, mainly due to the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. Another common feature is the appearance of an oily T-zone and dry skin everywhere else. In such cases, it is essential to hydrate the skin well. Age spots, sun spots and pigmentation may also appear towards the late 30s, especially in those who don't use sun-block. The 30s is a good age to start on your anti-ageing regimen in full swing! Treatments available:

Skin nourishment — The treatment is similar to what is recommended for the 20s. These help delay signs of ageing and keep the skin supple and youthful.

Visible radiance therapy — This is meant to flush out impurities, and leave the skin clean, invigorated, hydrated and nourished. Usually done under professional care, the treatment involves massaging with an oxygen-releasing cream, lavender oil and a mask suited to individual needs.

Oxygenation of skin cells — Recommended for providing an invigorated look.

Glycolic skin peel — Recommended for age spots, pigmentation and other signs of ageing. A solution applied to the skin causes the dead upper layer to peel off, allowing skin to regenerate.

Skin beyond the 40s

Dryness increases at this stage if one has not followed a good skincare routine in the past. The fine lines will deepen and appear prominent around the forehead, eye and mouth area.

The skin loses its elasticity by this time and looks saggy. Sunspots, age spots and pigmentation tend to appear in the late 40s. Your skin needs special attention now, so make sure you follow an intensive skincare routine. Treatments available:

Intraceuticals Infusion — A combination of oxygen under pressure (topical hyperbaric oxygen) and hydration factors (hyaluronic acid), to which vitamins, antioxidants and amino peptides are added, is used to provide hydration, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, brighten the skin, and give it an instant, visible lift. The treatment promises results after just one session and is recommended for all skin types, including sensitive ones.

Collagen facials — A collagen mask is used to accelerate skin regeneration.

Non-surgical facelift — A CE-approved (conforming to European Union standards) micro-current machine tones facial muscles and stimulates blood circulation, thereby ‘lifting' it. This treatment is also suited for the bust and buttock areas.

Botox injection — A temporary treatment for frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead lines and crow's feet near the eyes; the injected Botox paralyses the muscles causing the fine lines, and they disappear.

Under-eye dark circle treatment — This can be started even for those in the 30s with the onset of the dark circles.

Home-based remedies

Dry skin

Mix together an egg, a little honey and olive oil. Apply on face and keep for 10 minutes before rinsing it off.

You could take a milk bath once a week. Add some milk powder, a few drops of lavender oil and olive oil to your bathwater to nourish your skin. Mash half an avocado, add a few drops of fresh lemon juice and spread over cleansed skin. Wash after 15 minutes. Alternatively, mash a ripe banana and spread across face and throat. Rinse with lukewarm water after 10-15 minutes.

Dull skin

You can prepare a natural bleach by mixing curd, lemon juice, honey or egg white, and corn flour. Alternatively, mix potato juice with lemon juice. Leave the application on for 5-10 minutes, and rinse with warm water. Exfoliate the skin at least once a week using an oatmeal scrub, or a sugar and lemon juice mixture. For both dull and dry skin, you can use a mixture of curd, honey and a few drops of lemon juice.

Oily skin

You can make your own astringent by adding a few drops of eau de cologne to cold water. Scrub your face at least once a week using a paste of rice powder, lemon juice and water, or with oatmeal and milk. For a home-made mask to reduce oiliness, mix together fuller's earth ( multani mitti ), curd, lemon juice or kaolin, and a few drops of witch hazel.

Pimples

Keep the skin cool by using products containing calamine, cucumber, aloe vera, tea tree oil, fuller's earth, witch hazel and other similar ingredients. Home-made face packs containing fuller's earth, curd and witch hazel are recommended for those with pimples.
