“I store my produce for the lean season,” explains Sukhramji Patel, who owns around seven bighas in Bhawrasa Nagar Palika, Dewas district, Madhya Pradesh. The women he has hired to sort and pack his onion harvest have their own story to tell. “The biggest problem in our area is liquor. It totally consumes our menfolk, leaving us to fend for the family,” says 40-year-old Kailash Bai (first from left), busy at work with the others. For eight hours of labour, each of them earns ₹150.
