An international agri and food products expo titled Vibrant Tamil Nadu is now underway at IDA Scudder Trade Centre, Madurai.

Organised by the Tamilnadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, this event was inaugurated by Regional Chairman of FIEO (SR) A Sakthivel on August 12 and is to conclude on August 15.

The objective of organising such a massive event is to accelerate the growth of agri and processed food industries in the State and double the share of TN in the export of such products by 2022, said S Rethinavelu, Creative Head and Chairman of TN Chamber Foundation.

The expo has brought all the stakeholders from “farm to fork” such as farmers, food processors, manufacturers, traders, exporters and importers on to the platform. Participants have showcased their products in 200 stalls, he said.

Highlighting the tremendous export potential (mostly untapped) for such agro products, he said the production of agro products in TN has been huge. In 2016-17, vegetable production stood at 6,305 thousand tonnes, paddy at 6,250 thousand tonnes, fruits at 6,080 thousand tonnes, coconut at 4,850 thousand tonnes and plantation crops at 4,177 thousand tonnes.

Buyers from over 30 countries including US, Canada, European countries, Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, Indonesia and Vietnam are here to forge trade contracts with the exhibitors.

The Chamber is planning to make this an annual event, he added
