Dakshina Kannada district, which witnessed low voter turnout in its industrial townships during the 2013 Assembly elections, will take steps to create awareness about the need to participate in the election process, according to MR Ravi, Chief Executive Officer of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat.

Addressing media persons in Mangaluru on Monday, he said 27 per cent of voters from industrial townships of the district abstained from voting during the 2013 assembly elections. He said that lack of interest among the voters from outside the district, who come for work in different industrial establishments in the region, was one of the reasons for this.

The SVEEP (Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation) committee of the district is planning to conduct voters’ meet in industrial townships of the district. Ravi, who heads the SVEEP committee of the district, said that he will write to the heads of the industries in the district to organise voters’ meet in their townships to create awareness on voting.

The SVEEP committee will also focus on creating awareness about voting among persons with disabilities. As these persons find it difficult to cast their votes due to various reasons, the SVEEP committee will make all efforts to provide better amenities for such voters in the district.

To provide better access to immobile voters, steps will be taken to bring such persons to the polling booth and drop them back to their homes. Around 10,600 persons with disabilities are eligible to vote in the district, he said.
