Yesterday's deep depression has weakened into a depression and lay centred over North-West Odisha, 130 km South-East of Ambikapur and 140 km East-South-East of Pendra Road (both in Chhattisgarh).

It is likely to move towards North-West India and further weaken into a well-marked low pressure area by Saturday, an India Met Department (IMD) update said.

MUTED OVER SOUTH

Widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls are likely over Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh during the next 24 hours under the influence of the system.

The north-eastern states are likely to experience a sustained increase in rainfall activity from tomorrow . However, rains would remain muted over Peninsular India during the next five days.

Satellite maps also indicate that an anti-cyclone may develop over the Arabian Sea into the next week, with winds having started gradually changing direction from south-westerly to north-westerly and northerly.

An anti-cyclone repels monsoon winds, and may mean that the Arabian Sea may be preparing to shut down the monsoon, by routing the flows parallel to the West Coast instead (northerly direction).

They would proceed around the peninsular tip and turn southerly into the Bay of Bengal, bringing some rain to the South-East coast, especially Tamil Nadu and South coastal Andhra Pradesh.

In due course, an anti-cyclonic circulation may develop over the Bay also, effectively bringing the curtains down on the 2018 South-West monsoon.

FORECAST FOR TODAY

The US National Weather Services says that even during this phase, circulations may pop up locally along the East Coast and the northern parts of the West Coast, accompanied by some rain.

Meanwhile, an IMD update said the deep depression brought rain or thundershowers to most places over the plains of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha yesterday.

Many places over the hills of Bengal and Sikkim and a few places over West Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh also witnessed rain or thundershowers.

These were isolated over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, East Rajasthan, Madhya Maharashtra and coastal Karnataka.

The forecast for today is for heavy to very heavy rain over Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, while it will be heavy over Odisha, the north-eastern states, hills of Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Konkan, Goa, Vidarbha and Telangana.
