Mercedes-Benz has announced an armoured version of its 2014-generation S-class limousine, a coachbuilt rolling vault that can withstand grenades and a machine-gun barrage.

While not the only armoured version of the car on the market, the S—600 Guard is the only one built by the Sindelfingen factory.

It offers certified VR9 ballistic protection, the highest level currently available. From outside the beefed—up limousine looks the same as the standard issue S—class.

The S600 Guard can withstand multiple automatic weapon rounds fired from various angles while patented underbody reinforcement soaks up the blast from mines and grenades.

The S—class is shod with Michelin run—flat tyres on reinforced rims and has an automated fire suppression system along with optional sirens and strobe lights. An oxygen system seals off exterior vents and ensures the air stays pure while occupants are under siege.

The bulletproof glass and armour plating push the car’s weight to four tonnes but the S600 still boasts a getaway speed of up to 210 km/h from a 530—horsepower V12 engine. Prices start at 400,000 euros (535,000 dollars) which is more than twice the list price for the regular long—wheelbase S—class.
