India on Wednesday urged Pakistan to take “immediate action” against its personnel for “killing and mutilating” the bodies of two Indian soldiers in the Line of Control along the Krishna Ghati sector.

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar conveyed this to High Commissioner of Pakistan to India Abdul Basit, who was summoned.

During the meeting, Jaishankar conveyed India’s “outrage” over the May 1 incident and said that the government considered this a “strong act of provocation” and one in which “immediate action” against Pakistani soldiers and commanders should be taken.

According to Gopal Baglay, Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Pakistani forces crossed the LoC and “beheaded” the two Indian soldiers. “It was significant that the attack was preceded by covering fire from Pakistani posts in Battal sector. Blood samples of the Indian soldiers that have been collected and the trail of blood on Roza Nala clearly shows that the killers returned across the LoC,” Baglay added.

He said India had sufficient evidence to show Pakistan that the act was carried out by its army.

“We have proof it was carried out by the Pakistan army. We have demanded from Pakistan that whoever from their army was behind this incident be punished,” Baglay said.

During the meeting with Foreign Secretary, Basit denied of the involvement of its army, said Baglay.

Pakistan denial “He (Basit) of course denied that the Pakistani army was involved, but assured us that he will convey contents of our demarche to his government,” he said.

Meanwhile, on the issue of other countries offering to mediate between India and Pakistan, with an aim to find a resolution to the Kashmir issue, India said the issue is a matter that has to be addressed only between India and Pakistan.

Countries such as the US, China and Turkey have also urged both sides to talk and arrest the recent spate of violence in Kashmir.

Pakistan Foreign Affairs Adviser Sartaj Aziz has said that the Indian government had broken its own record of “brutality” in Kashmir, not only in “target killing but also by indiscriminately killing over 100 young unarmed Kashmiri protestors”, adding that Indian forces had “blinded hundreds of Kashmiris, including children, and injured over 16,000 protesters with live ammunition, pellet guns and gas shells.”

“The Indian counter proposal that it is ready for bilateral dialogue with Pakistan is no longer credible because in the past two decades India has scuttled all opportunities for a meaningful dialogue to resolve the Kashmir issue in accordance with the UN Security Council's relevant Resolutions on Kashmir,” Aziz said.
