Japanese shares were up nearly 3 per cent at the close of trading on Tuesday, following a rise in the US dollar.

The benchmark Nikkei index of 225 leading shares gained 405.52 points, or 2.99 per cent, to close at 13,978.44.

The broader-based Topix index rose 2.81 per cent, or 31.40 points, to close at 1,149.18.

The yen weakened to trade at 99,52-54 to the dollar at 4 pm in Tokyo (0700 GMT), up from 99.31-33 yen at 5 pm Monday. A weaker yen makes Japanese products more competitive overseas and boosts repatriated earnings.
