President Donald Trump and his deputy Mike Pence today offered condolences to the victims and families of the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history, after a gunman opened fire at a concert in Las Vegas, killing at least 50 people and injuring over 400 others.
“My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting,” Trump tweeted.
His spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the White House was monitoring the situation closely and offered full support to state and local officials to deal with the situation.
Vice President Pence said the hearts and prayers of the American people are with you.
“You have our condolences and sympathies,” he tweeted.
“To victims, families & loved ones affected by this senseless violence in Las Vegas, Karen & I are praying for you & offering our love...,” Pence tweeted.
“To the courageous first responders, thank you for your acts of bravery,” he said.
At least 50 people were shot dead and another more than 400 injured when a gunman went on a shooting rampage during a music festival in the casino city of Las Vegas, making it the deadliest mass shooting in the United States.
“This is a tragic incident,” Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo told reporters. He said at least 50 people were killed and 406 others injured in the incident.
The FBI has joined the investigations.
The gunman identified as Steven Paddock, 64, was a local Las Vegas resident, was killed in a 32nd floor of a hotel room. The police have also located an Asian female identified as Marilou Danley, 41, who has been described as roommate of the shooter.
The gunman, acted alone, Lombardo said adding that the police was executing a search warrant.
The police said they received first reports of active shooting from a Mandalay Bay Hotel towards a musical concert taking place across the road.
The gunman was shooting from the 32nd floor of the hotel.
He was shot dead later during an exchange of fire with the police.
According to eye witness, they saw multiple victims as they fled the concert venue.
“All I heard was a lot of bang, bang, bang, and everybody hit the ground, and everybody started running,” said Patrick Martin, a Southern California resident, who was at the concert with his wife and son, told the local Las Vegas Sun.
“We were all dancing, we were having a good time, all of a sudden I heard all of these shots,” said Candace LaRosa, of Huntington Beach, California, who initially thought it was a part of a fireworks show. “It was just mass, mass blood everywhere,” LaRosa told the daily.
“We were watching the concert having a great time, then we heard what sounded like firecrackers. I guess it was an automatic weapon going off but it literally sounded like firecrackers,” said another witness Joe Pitz.
