A study by Stanford University has ranked IIM Bangalore as the top Indian institution in the area of business and management research. The study by Sharique Hasan of Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business has ranked Indian universities and institutes based on productivity in social science research.

Ranking criteria

A total of 61 universities and institutes were rated and then ranked according to their research productivity (citations and publications) in four categories: sociology, demography and family studies; economics; psychology; and business and management.

IIT Delhi, and IIM Calcutta are ranked second and third respectively in the same category with ISB Hyderabad at fourth. MDI Gurgaon takes the fifth spotwhereas, IIM Ahmedabad lags behind in the sixth spot.

Not just business and management, some institutes figure in other three categories too but way below various other universities and IITs. For instance, IIM Ahmedabad is ranked sixth in psychology-related research, followed by ISB at eighth in the same category.

Delhi University is ranked first in sociology, demography and family studies-related research in India, whereas, the Delhi-based Indian Statistical Institute has grabbed the top spot in economics research.

The study is based on peer-reviewed journal publication and citation counts, and takes into account articles published in one of 3,015 social science journals indexed by ISI (including Indian journals as well as international journals).

The author of the article must be affiliated with an university or institute located in India between 2000 and 2010.

Research output

Also, the measures used in the rankings do not incorporate research output in the form of books, book chapters, journals not indexed by ISI, peer-reviewed conferences, as well as other academic writing such as case studies. The research-based study started in 2011 and took 16 months to come to fruition. The results were shared last week.
