Only five per cent of the MBAs who graduated during 2010-13 are entrepreneurs now, according to the global alumni survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). And about 45 per cent of these five per cent alumni had started businesses at the time of graduation.

Of these 45 per cent, 14 per cent of the recent alumni entrepreneurs (2010–13) work in the tech industry. On the other hand, just two per cent of the alumni entrepreneurs who graduated before 1990 are tech-preneurs.

Also only 11 per cent of the alumni from the years 1959-2013 were self-employed. Around 80 per cent of the alumni were currently working for an employer.

The survey also reveals that soft skills account for 3 of the top 5 skills that business school alumni use every day on the job. Interpersonal skills are the most frequently used skills, followed by knowledge of general business functions, conscientiousness, managing the decision-making process, and the combined skills of learning, motivation, and leadership.

A vast majority of MBAs rate the value of their degree highly (94 per cent) in the survey. Most of them report high degrees of job satisfaction (83 per cent), and say their expectations for the financial return on investment on their MBA were met or exceeded (79 per cent).

The 2014 Alumni Perspectives Survey of GMAC surveyed alumni from 132 business schools in 29 countries. Nearly 21,000 business school alumni from the classes of 1959-2013 participated in the study.
