The Israeli Prime Minister, Mr. Yitzhak Rabin, was assassinated by a Jewish far-Right extremist at a rally and a stunned world today mourned the death of a leader who struggled for peace in West Asia. Mr. Rabin, 73, was the first Israeli premier to be assassinated since the country was created in 1948. He will be given a State funeral and laid to rest with full honours at a Jerusalem Jewish cemetery tomorrow (5-30 p.m. 1ST). Mr. Rabin had just addressed 1,00,000 people at the Left wing “Peace yes, violence no” rally last night and was walking down the steps of Tel Aviv City Hall when the lone assassin, Yigal Amir, shot three times at him with a 9mm revolver.

Banks are expecting massive intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the call money market on Monday through the infusion of large funds to improve liquidity and to cool the zooming call rates prior to the opening of the Rs. 1,500-crore State bonds for subscription. A softer market is expected to take the sting out of the banks’ reluctance to invest heavy sums in 14 per cent Government bonds, while the overnight borrowing rates remain at a substantially higher level.
