The National Front Chairman and Telugu Desam Party patriarch, Mr. Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, passed away at his Banjara Hills residence here in the wee hours of Thursday following a massive heart attack. The former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, who got up around 3-30 a.m. to do his routine morning exercises, complained of chest pain and died around 4 a.m. before doctors could arrive. The cremation will take place at 4 p.m. on Friday. The actor-turned politician, popularly known as NTR, was 73 and is survived by his second wife, Mrs. Lakshmi Parvathi, seven sons and four daughters. The State Government declared holiday for today and tomorrow and the State will observe mourning for seven days.

States’ demand for more palmolein supply rejected

The Centre has turned down States’ demand to increase palmolein allocation by two lakh tonnes for the public distribution system (PDS) this year. This is in addition to the two lakh tonnes which the State Trading Corporation (STC) has already been allowed to import for distribution to States and Union Territories during February to October this year. States such as Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh have sought a doubling in imported palmolein allocation, raising the projected requirement figure to nearly four lakh tonnes.

P. C. Sen quits as Peerless CMD

Mr. P. C. SEN has quit his post of CMD in Peerless General Finance & Investment Company. The development is being seen in corporate circles as a fall-out of the recent Supreme Court verdict on the controversial issue of service charge collected by Peerless from customers. Mr. Sen has been associated with Peerless for over nine years.
