The 18-month-old BJP Ministry in Gujarat was sacked, a day after it won a controversial vote of confidence, and the Legislative Assembly kept under suspended animation as the Centre imposed President’s rule on the State for the fifth time. Controversy surrounded the vote of confidence “won” by the BJP Ministry headed by Mr. Suresh Mehta by 92 votes to nil as it was preceded by unprecedented bedlam and violent scenes during which Opposition members and Independents were evicted from the House.

Sensex sheds 64 points on selling pressure

Equities on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange did an about-turn on heavy selling pressure in pivotals from domestic and foreign financial institutions. The BSE sensitive index shed 64 points to end the day at 3,349.77 points. The NSE-50 index closed at 977.76 points, down 16.67 points. The recovery in the share price of SBI was shortlived as heavy selling in the stock wiped out Rs. 10.25 over the previous close. The scrip ended the session at Rs. 263 with 73.94 lakh shares worth Rs. 199.14 crores changing hands.

Doctors ‘clear’ Sukh Ram

The former Communications Minister and prime accused in the Rs. 1.68-crore telecom deal case, Mr. Sukh Ram, was discharged from AIIMS and taken by CBI officials for interrogation after the eight-member panel of experts gave the green signal. A copy of the report submitted by the experts committee which examined Sukh Ram was also given to CBI, the sources said, adding the report suggested certain medical facilities and treatment to be provided to the former Minister.
