Unions are calling for Jaguar Land Rover to give its British employees guarantees on job security following news that the company was looking at establishing its first production plant in continental Europe.

The Union unite said that it had been in talks with the company to seek assurance that the expansion and investment elsewhere would not be “to the detriment of the UK workforce.”

“They made sacrifices and worked tirelessly through the dark day to make JLR the world leader it is today… We trust that JLR recognises this by giving assurances on job security for the future,” Unite official Des Quinn said in an emailed statement.

JLR said that the UK remained the “cornerstone” of its business, and it had invested heavily in its UK facilities as well as in the new engine manufacturing facility where 1,400 jobs were being created.

The current expansion would help long term growth, and would allow the company to “invest in the development of more new vehicles and technologies, which supports jobs in the UK,” said JLR CEO Ralf Speth.
