Recent developments relating to Air India do not augur well for the national carrier. Some tough measures have to be taken to redeem lost credibility and bring the carrier on track. The workforce must learn to behave sensibly, and stand rock-solid behind the company in times of crisis. The manner in which the Aviation Ministry and the Air India management have dealt with the threat of striking pilots deserves appreciation.

Time to act fast
This refers to ‘US adopts West Bengal as ‘partner State' ( Business Line , May 11). Though the recent Kolkata visit of the US Secretary of State, Ms Hillary Clinton, is a shot in the arm for the West Bengal Chief Minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee, the government under her leadership has to chalk out strong business strategies and execute them.
The State must generate more funds by way of increasing tax slabs and not depend only on Central grants to ease the present financial crisis.

Air India crisis
It is unfortunate that the Centre is unable to take any concrete steps to revitalise Air India. Already crippled by financial crunch, the carrier is facing more trouble by way of pilots' strike. Mere ordinances in declaring the strike illegal would not serve the purpose. The management, along with government representatives, should sit with the unions and work out a settlement for disbursal of dues to employees.
