Your article “Anna Hazare misses the point” ( Business Line , April 13) does focus attention on certain glaring weaknesses in our system. But a strong Lokpal Bill is a step in the right direction. If it were not for a strong Press, strong opposition Parties, strong Supreme Court, strong CAG, and strong CVC, the 2G or CWG scams would not have been unearthed.

Anna Hazare is for a strong Lokpal Bill. The person selected must be of strong integrity and absolutely fearless. Swami Vivekananda yearned for 100 strong men of integrity with absolute commitment to change the face of India. We need a thousand today. And we must find them. Anna Hazare is one among them. He may commit a few mistakes. But nothing is achieved without mistakes. They can be corrected.

We will all be beneficiaries of a strong Lokpal Bill. It can be no one's wish that Parliament should have primacy. Each wing of governance — Parliament, Legislature and Executive, including regulatory authorities, press and civil activists — must be independent and have primacy in their well-defined spheres.

Voice of the people

Anna Hazare might have missed a “point” or two, but he has voiced the sentiments of the people. Public support clearly shows that the people are frustrated with the level of corruption and find it particularly insulting to bear the “corrupt Indian” tag.

Anna Hazare has drawn the attention of the nation to this issue, when national institutions are weakened due to “weak leadership”.

When business is mixed with politics, the nation is treated like a mall and citizens are looked upon like consumers; corruption spreads like a cancer, destroying the body politic.
