The efforts by some opposition parties to initiate impeachment proceedings against the CJI, Dipak Misra, is a desperate attempt to shore up their dwindling political fortunes. The Opposition would be better served to introspect on the reasons for their declining public acceptance and make necessary amends in their approach so as to be ready to give the BJP a semblance of a fight in 2019.

The Opposition must also take note of the fact that the four revolting senior Supreme Court judges have resumed duty, an indication that the dispute resolution mechanism has addressed their grievances effectively.

SC’s behind us

The Supreme Court coming down heavily on crimes committed in the name of honour once again proves that it protects the fundamental rights of citizens and individual liberty. Judgments on triple ralaq, marital rape, and honour killings shows the importance the apex court gives to individual liberty and gender rights. The Centre and the State governments must enact a law in accordance with the guidelines of the Supreme Court to regulate the activities of Khap panchayats and prevent them from taking the law into their hands.

It is ironical that Khap has come to stay even in this jet age. Khap panchayats are packed with influential and affluent people in villages with little or no educational background who slap punishments on the vulnerable. While the courts are the only ray of hope for litigants to get justice, khap panchayats let influential people get off scot-free. None of the political parties has the temerity to question them.

Responsible users

This refers to ‘Data privacy: Time to act' by S Ronendra Singh (From the Viewsroom, March 28). It is not the Government alone that can regulate data privacy; it is also the responsibility of individual users who need to use technology sensibly.

Self-restraint is better than external control. However, people should be made aware of data protocols. Data protection laws also need global recognition and support.

There is need for safety not just on the social media but also in organisations such as post offices, the voters’ list, the income tax department, and logistics companies. The Government can only provide a legal platform to decide policy on data protection but it is up to people to be alert.

Professionalism’s key

This refers to your timely editorial, ‘A taste of markets’ (March 28). Any improvement in the efficient management of domestic resources will depend on political will. India’s domestic stock of gold and jewellery lying idle with individuals and organisations needs to be mainstreamed.

Evasion of tax must be discouraged by providing appropriate incentives and disincentives. The Government seems to be gripped with fear whenever it thinks about taxing agricultural income.

Also, it should reconsider the decision to sell PSUs to shore up deficits.

Get real

This is with reference to Poornima Joshi’s report, ‘Mamata in Delhi, meets leaders to forge anti-BJP front’ (March 28).Talks about coming together with Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav are meaningless as the ‘honeymoon’ between the the SP and the BSP is already over. Indian history is replete with similar opportunistic fronts being formed in the name of consolidating the nation’s ‘secular’ forces. But what’s their current status? They have simply vanished into thin air.

Erratum

With reference to ‘MoU signed to produce low-cost Nano Sensors’ (February 11), the MoU between VMRF and GINTEM is only for research/academic collaboration and student/faculty development and not for product development, as reported.
