With reference to the article “Race for the highest office begins” ( Business Line , May 1), it is sad to see political parties mollycoddle their allies to push their candidates for presidential elections.
It seems national interest has become subservient to individual interests.
The barter system still finds its way in Indian politics where “power is barter for power”.
The selection of presidential candidate should be based purely on merits rather than chauvinism of political parties.

Person with vision
The post of president calls for a high level of maturity and vision. Many a times, it seems to be confined to attending functions and distributing sweets to children.
When we talk of the race for the highest office of President, it should be a more serious search for a candidate who will suit the post and fulfill all the requirements and not one favouring a particular party or sect.
Very people know the powers the President holds in the country as he/she is never seen in news related to functioning or governing of country.
The candidate has to be more neutral to any group, with a long vision and better understanding of people's demand and not limited to a party's demand.
