Apropos ‘When a minority govt calls the shots’ ( Business Line , October 10), one has to come to terms with the fact that along with coalition governments, minority governments have also become a reality. Such minority governments could perform well if a shrewd person is placed at the helm of affairs. It seems that coalition governments supported by the principal parties –BJP or Congress – are unlikely to complete their term as these two parties are the main contenders for ruling the country. But the governments headed by Congress could last as the parties unite on the plank of ‘keeping BJP out’.

There is a feeling the UPA II government is under threat after withdrawal of support by Trinamool Congress. But the developments in the coming days may prove otherwise, as no party, including Congress and BJP, is prepared to face an election now. The government is, therefore, ready to push reform measures.
