A thousand words? A picture can be worth millions of dollars. The upcoming Sotheby’s auction of ‘Photographs’ in May, will showcase the works of leading contemporary photographers such as Hiroshi Sugimoto, Susan Derges and Guido Mocafico.

The sale will also include ones from the early days of photography.

According to Sotheby’s, the highlight is a unique 1850s album comprising 44 salt or albumenised salt prints by the ingenious John Beasley Greene.

The works offer spectacular views of the Egyptian landscape and Constantine in Algeria.

Sotheby’s has tagged an estimate of £100,000-150,000 for the album. Richard Avedon’s alluring portfolio Avedon/Paris 1978 is estimated to fetch the highest amount at £120,000-180,000.

Peter Beard’s unique ‘Rothschild’s Giraffes’ depicting the African Savannah is expected to rake in £50,000-70,000. There are also works by masters of fashion photography, such as Horst P Horst, a German-American who is best known for his photographs of women and fashion, and interior architecture.

The sale will also feature contemporary photographs by artists such as Vera Lutter.
