BMW India has had a lull in its launches after rolling out the X5 M and the X6 M.

Late last week, the German luxury car brand unveiled a new M Sport variant for the 5 Series, which is intended to offer more choice to buyers and expand the appeal of the executive sedan.

BMW says that the 5 Series has a dual character which makes it perfect for driving to the board meeting and having some fun during the weekend. So, sportiness and driver-orientation is part of the identity of the 5 Series Sedan. The new 520d M Sport is targeted at buyers who are passionate and seek individualisation in their 5 Series.

Design In the new variant, the M aerodynamics package and 18-inch M light alloys featuring a double spoke design contribute towards enhanced driving dynamics and an even more powerful exterior design. Powerful air inlets give the flow-optimised front apron more presence.

Side skirts with additional contour lines sharpen the looks and are rounded off by the rear apron with exhaust pipe finishers in Dark Chrome and a striking diffuser in Dark Shadow metallic.

This is largely only a new trim line and so the badge is extremely important to announce the new, special bits even more.

The ‘M’ badge on front wings and M designation on the door sill strip contours, and the Adaptive LED Headlights do just that.

The new BMW 520d M Sport will be locally produced at BMW’s Plant near Chennai in a diesel variant and has been priced at ₹54 lakh (all India ex-showroom price).

Cabin The interior of the new variant also gets some sporty additions. New sports front seats for driver and passenger in leather upholstery and with electrical adjustment are designed to offer lateral support and comfort. The upholstery’s exclusive character is underlined by high-grade materials and contrasting seams. In the cockpit, the M multifunction steering wheel, the aluminium hexagon interior trim strip and BMW Individual headliner Anthracite are extras that are offered as part of the M Sport trim.

The heart of the 5 Series, the powertrain, remains the same unit and has also been retained in the same state of tune. So, there is no real change in performance characteristics.

The BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel engine in the new BMW 520d M Sport is the 1,995 cc diesel engine which combines Common Rail direct injection and a turbo charger with variable turbine geometry to deliver a power output of 190 hp and an impressive torque of 400 Nm. It takes 7.7 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 kmph and the top speed is 233 kmph.Paired to this diesel burner is the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. For even greater driving pleasure, the auto gearbox is offered with steering-wheel mounted paddles for manual gear selection.

With BMW EfficientDynamics, the BMW 520d M Sport is equipped with the most comprehensive technology packages to reduce fuel consumption and increase driving dynamics – such as Intelligent Lightweight Construction, Auto Start-Stop, ECO PRO modes (ECOPRO, Comfort, Sport), Brake-Energy Regeneration, 50:50 Weight Distribution and many other innovative technologies.

The new BMW 520d M Sport is also offered with the full compliment of safety tech. The extensive range of BMW ConnectedDrive features multifunction instrument display, the next generation of BMW iDrive with the 25.9cm colour display, BMWNavigation system Pro with 3D maps (integrated Global Positioning System-GPS), BMW Apps, Park Distance Control and Connectivity through Bluetooth devices.

The BMW 5 Series portfolio now consists of two diesel engines (520d and 530d) which are locally produced in Chennai and a petrol engine (520i) available as a CBU (Completely built-up) unit.
