The delayed, but much awaited launch of the BMW G 310 R and the G 310 GS finally happened earlier this week. The two bikes — the compact, sportier R and the raised, off-road capable GS — are the only bikes that are in the sub-500cc size category in BMW Motorrad’s portfolio currently.

The bikes are being produced in collaboration with TVS Motor at their Hosur facility. These bikes also share the same tubular steel chassis and powertrain with the TVS Apache RR 310. The BMW G 310 R was launched last year and has been available in many markets globally, including in the US and in Europe.

The fit and finish quality of both the R and the GS is exceptional for bikes in this price and size class.

As a reflection of its confidence in the quality and reliability of the two new bikes, BMW Motorrad is offering a standard warranty for three years and unlimited kilometres; a first in the segment. The suspension has been tuned for Indian road conditions.

The engine in both the bikes is a single-cylinder, 313cc water-cooled, four-stroke unit with four valves and two overhead camshafts.

Featuring electronic fuel injection, the engine delivers an identical output of 34hp and torque of 28Nm in both the bikes.

The engine’s cylinder is backward tilted in a open deck design with the cylinder head turned by 180-degrees. This configuration has enabled the intake tract to be positioned at the front and in the direction of travel.

The gearbox is a constant-mesh, 6-speed unit. Both the motorcycles are capable of a top speed of 143 kmph and accelerate from 0-50 kmph in 2.5 seconds. Rated fuel efficiency is 3.3 litres per 100 km.

The BMW G 310 R has been priced at ₹2.99 lakh and the G 310 GS will retail for ₹3.49 lakh (both ex-showroom).
