Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, a Chennai-headquartered specialised diabetes care provider, has raised ₹66 crore ($10.23 million) in a Series A round, from impact investor Lok Capital and Evolvence India Fund.
It will use the money to expand to 100 centres in the next four years. It has 25 centres now, mainly in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with a small presence in Karnataka and one clinic in Bhubaneshwar. This is the first round of institutional funding into the company, with all the centres so far having been set up out of own funds. Diabetologist V Mohan set up the company along with his wife Rema Mohan, since deceased, in 1991. The Centre had a marginal presence outside Tamil Nadu and a pan-India presence requires a whole lot of other expertise and capital, for a rapid expansion. Till now, the company had expanded slowly – one centre at a time – but now planned to add four times the number of clinics in just four years. This required managerial bandwidth and adding staff at a rapid pace and, more importantly, training them just as quickly.
