Here is a marketing project that could prove to be a good development exercise and go a long way in attracting consumers and providing jobs to the local populace.

From distant Sikkim comes the news that the State is planning to accelerate its efforts to market its treasured Khangchendzonga National Park, along with preserving its ecological heritage.

Tagged the country’s first ‘Mixed World Heritage Site’ by UNESCO, it is expected to give a boost to eco tourism, reducing the negative aspects of commercialisation and giving rise to many more jobs.

Called the Himalayan wonderland, its natural beauty offers opportunities for activities such as trekking, rafting, following forest-trails and visits to monasteries. For the locals this is a great opportunity to earn a livelihood and their repertoire of jobs could include running pack animals, portering, guiding and lodge management.

Promoting the State, Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling said recently, “it is the most favourite tourist destination in the entire north eastern region and tourist arrivals here have doubled in the last 10 years.”

Sikkim targets 12 lakh tourists by 2025. With 47 per cent forest cover and the country’s highest mountain peak, Kanchenjunga, it has a lot going for itself.
