One’s glad to find some organisations working towards a scientific temper in the hinterland. Education trust, Agastya International Foundation, has just announced its project to introduce a Mobile Science Lab (MSL) in partnership with IT company Verizon India, in Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu.

The intention is to reach 2,800 students in 20 schools of the district and engage them in practical learning programmes. The mobile lab is specially designed to nudge students living in rural areas to get interested in science, technology, engineering and maths. The idea is to use experiments and demonstrations to enthuse children from Class V to Class IX who have limited or no access to academic laboratories.

While the teaching approach is aligned to the National Curriculum Framework and the topics the same as those under the NCERT syllabus, the project will include MSL travelling to each school and culminating in Science Fairs a few times in the year. The programme will include a young instructor programme, to make teachers out of passionate students, and a teacher orientation to bring out the best in these professionals.
