The Ahmedabad Smart City Project will touch the lives of its residents profoundly, the city’s Municipal Commissioner D Thara tells Virendra Pandit . Excerpts from an interview:
Given the density of Ahmedabad’s population, particularly in the Walled City area, do you think the Smart City project will face implementation hurdles?
No. The people of Ahmedabad are very cooperative. The density of population is our asset. Even Singapore and Hong Kong have developed into smart cities despite their dense populations, and they have managed well.
What will a transformed Ahmedabad look like after the implementation of the project?
The Smart City Project aims at the use of modern technology in integrating various services used by all its citizens. The collective effect will be to make their lives more comfortable.
How will it touch the lives of the city's 56 lakh residents?
The project will change the very ecosystem in which we live. It will bring home the fact that we live and work in a larger environment. Our levels of efficiency will go up. The people will have more time for leisure and will thrive in more liveable conditions, which will improve the quality of their lives.
How realistic is the project?
Very. In fact, our efforts to make Ahmedabad a Heritage City were already in place. With the Smart City Project, the city will ideally evolve as a global city.
