September 29
“Heart Choices NOT Hard Choices” — is the theme of this World Heart Day, on September 29. On the occasion, the World Health Organisation (WHO) will repeat the need to reduce the consumption of salt, which is linked to approximately 2.5 million people’s death annually from cardiovascular diseases. This year’s theme also looks at the benefits of reducing salt consumption, particularly in terms of improving health and reducing avoidable deaths from cardiovascular diseases. With its rising graph on heart diseases, India would do well to take some steps to reduce salt intake. Coinciding with the day, the WHO will also hold an interactive online discussion on Twitter with one of its experts on the use, benefits and harms associated with salt.
