The first meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury will take place from September 24 to 29. Nearly four years after the global community adopted the Minamata Convention on Mercury, the global treaty, which seeks to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of mercury, came into force only last month. Organised by UN Environment, the event has other mercury-related activities around it, including “Hg Week” from September 22 to raise awareness about mercury and mercury compounds in an effort to “Make Mercury History”. Mercury finds everyday uses in objects (from thermometers to fluorescent lightbulbs); in processes such as chlorine and plastics production; and is used by artisanal goldminers in parts of the world.
