Make it a priority: Exercise and fitness are priorities in our household. It starts with my wife, who is an avid runner, having logged enough miles to circle the Earth participating in marathons, triathlons, etc. She is a motivation for the rest of us.
Find something you like: I like to cycle, and used to bike to work at the State Department headquarters in Washington, DC. Biking is more difficult in Mumbai, but I sometimes ride around Bandra Kurla Complex on Sunday afternoons when traffic is light -- though I still have to avoid rickshaws and wind my way through the odd cricket game on the street.
Be open to alternatives: When I can’t cycle outside, I go to the Consulate gym or ride my stationary bike at home.
Start young : My wife and I try to instill good exercise habits in our two daughters that we hope will last a lifetime. They are active in sports and dance at school, and my wife and I encourage them to exercise on weekends.
A family affair: We enjoy exercising as a family -- running or swimming laps together and organising informal relay races or mini-triathlons every now and then for a change of pace.
