For this World ‘No Tobacco Day’ (May 31), the World Health Organisation and the Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control are asking to get ready for a plain (standardised) packaging of tobacco products. Plain packaging refers to “measures to restrict or prohibit the use of logos, colours, brand images or promotional information on packaging other than brand names and product names displayed in a standard colour and font style (plain packaging). Tobacco kills up to half of its users, and about six million people die each year from tobacco. The WHO call for plain packaging comes even as India sees an intense debate over increasing the pictorial size of the health warning on tobacco products.
