Intensive training is a given for any sportsperson, but factors such as a good diet and sufficient sleep are equally important. When we trained as children, my father strictly kept us away from spicy and oily food; our diet comprised dal, roti, curd, salad and fruits.
Sleeping on time and getting rest is crucial, especially when I am training for competitions. It is extremely important for me to sleep at 10 because my training schedule goes for a toss without adequate rest.
Getting 7-8 hours of sleep infuses me with energy for the next day. A quiet bedroom and a comfortable mattress are extremely important to get a good night’s sleep. This helps me have an intensive workout the following day, which is all I need to feel great.
Before my final match at the 2010 Commonwealth Games (won a gold medal), I did sleep late because I was nervous. But this was a rare instance and I had full faith in all the hard work I had put in over the years, which finally paid off.
Success is a combination of sheer discipline and hard work; it has to become a lifestyle.
