The World Health Assembly is the decision-making body of the World Health Organization. And the 72nd WHA is scheduled during May 20-28, in Geneva, Switzerland. The annual event is attended by delegations from all WHO Member States and the focus is on a specific health agenda prepared by the Executive Board.

The main functions of the WHA are to determine the policies of the Organization, appoint the Director-General, supervise financial policies, and review and approve the proposed programme budget.

On the agenda also is WHO’s preparedness on global public health emergencies and its response. The Kerala Nipah virus incident finds mention here. The Assembly reviews various other public health programmes, including that of polio, universal healthcare, and access to medicine programmes, besides bringing attention to critical concerns such as climate change and refugee and migrant health.
