Jinoy Jose P The market for convertible laptops is booming with almost all players worth their salt bringing out hybrids that try to blend superior performance with a stylish form factor. Acer, one of the oldest players in the personal computing market, has been trying for quite some time now to make its laptops uber cool while delivering a premium performance, of course, at an affordable price in India. The Acer Nitro Spin 5 is among the latest of its offerings to the convertible bouquet, which with a price tag of ₹79,999 and above, enters the upper stream of the mid-range market for laptops that targets gamers and workaholics alike.

Undoubtedly, this is one of the best-looking laptops from the Acer stable. The overall red tone gives the device a pleasing geeky tenor. Most gaming buffs would like this for sure. The body is strong and sleek. In fact, it is sleeker than many gaming laptops in the market now and is relatively lighter. The edges are rough enough to provide a strong grip without compromising on the ease of handling. Most conveniently, the laptop ‘sits’ properly even on a moderately slanted surface. This is a big plus, especially for those who keep changing positions as they work.

The Acer Nitro Spin 5 runs games and videos fairly well. Acer seems to have put in some effort to make the gaming experience above average and the results are quite impressive. The device stayed cool, literally and figuratively, even after four to 10 hours of steady browsing, but when we tried non-stop gaming for that long, it tended to heat up a bit (full disclosure: I have a son with an army of dedicated friends who can keep any gaming device engaged for umpteen hours). The device performed reasonably well even during intensive processing tasks (by which I mean watching long hours of video, audio-video editing, photo editing, streaming and other multi-tasking activities).

The Acer Nitro Spin 5 has a 15.6-inch display and runs on a 1.80 GHZ Intel Core i7 processor, aided by 8 GB RAM and has a 256 GB Solid Slate Drive (SSD), which makes data transfer and processing much faster. There is an extra 1 TB hard drive for other storage needs. It relies on NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1050 chip for dedicated graphic duties. Acer’s own TrueHarmony and Smart Amplification audio tools are supported by Dolby Audio Premium to deliver crisp, unadulterated audio. Still, we advise you to connect the audio to a better bluetooth-powered Hi-Fi audio system if you want a full-fledged experience when you play games. For all other audio needs, the Acer Nitro 5 fits the bill without hassles.

The device has a fingerprint reader, which is a novelty. The scanner works quick and syncs with Windows Hello to help identify users without a password. Equally fascinating is the 360-degree hinge, which helps the Nitro Spin 5 offer laudable viewing comfort, especially for those who want to game-on-the-go. The keyboard, which is spaced comfortably, sporting gamer-friendly red and black keys, is a delight to experience. It is smooth and stylish, if you can ignore those tiny arrow keys.

Easily, the Acer Nitro Spin 5 is a value-for-money gaming laptop that can be quite a handy tool for those who want to spend long hours with their PC, for gaming or for work.
