Chinese smartphone-maker Huawei’s sub-brand Honor just completed three years in India. And in these three years Honor has tried to impress customers with some well-made smartphones. For example, the Honor 8 Pro launched earlier this year gave stiff competition to the OnePlus 5.

On its third anniversary Honor, launched the 9i with four cameras and smaller bezels, to appeal to young buyers.

Four in one Honor 9i offers different options for those who love to take a lot of photos on their phone. This smartphone gives you four cameras. It is not the first phone to have four cameras but it is the first with a quad-camera setup and full vision display. Gionee S10 (launched in China) is the other phone with four cameras.

The 13 MP front camera and 16 MP rear camera come with additional 2 MP sensors to give that much-loved bokeh effect in which you can blur the background and make it look like something shot on a DSLR. A ‘smart selfie toning flash’ feature claims to intelligently adjust the brightness level in keeping with the surroundings. Both the cameras helped me click some good photos and the rear camera captures a decent amount of detail in landscapes and macros. But I felt the selfie camera did a better job than the primary. Low-light selfies turn out to be better thanks to the selfie flash.

Even with four cameras the low-light performance is still average, which is a challenge facing by most of the other smartphone makers also.

The bokeh effect even extends to the video and this is a nice addition. Both the rear and front cameras can record videos at 1080p. But the beautification mode is available only at 720p. The 9i’s camera features a lot of filters and modes that people can experiment with. In addition, you can download more modes.

Smaller bezels Today, smartphone makers are also focussed on bezel-less displays or thin bezels. The Honor 9i is also trying the same. The Honor 9i’s 5.9-inch FullHD+ panel has an aspect ratio of 18:9 and its matte back and sleek design give it premium looks.

The phone is powered by Huawei’s own octa-core Kirin 659 chipset coupled with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, which is expandable to 128 GB. It runs on EMUI 5.1 based on Android 7.0 Nougat. The 9i is an average performer. Sometimes I felt small hiccups after continuous intensive gaming.

Average battery The 3,340mAh battery turns out to be an average performer. I found it difficult to get through the day and charging took slightly more time in comparison to other phones in this price range.

Overall, for its price, the Honor 9i is a good buy. Those who love to take photos and videos can go for this.
