Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus announced on Monday that consumers looking to buy its flagship OnePlus Two handset would no longer require an invite. The company followed this up with the announcement of an open sale for its other offering, the OnePlus X that starts today.

However, the company has indicated that these recent moves do not mean that the invite system has been permanently scrapped. “As invites allow us to offer a better transaction experience to our users and allow us to quickly adjust production depending on user response to our products, we plan to continue with the invite system in the foreseeable future,” said Vikas Agarwal, General Manager, OnePlus India.

The upstart company, known for its ‘flagship-killer’ positioning, has always sold its products via an invite system with occasional promotional periods and open sales. Commenting on the ending of invite requirements for the OnePlus Two, Agarwal said that the change was down to a supplies scaling to a level where the company could ensure a steady supply of stock across key markets.

Supply issues

According to a Reuters report, OnePlus will narrowly miss its target of selling 1 million handsets in the Indian market this year, with supply chain issues marring the company’s sales.

It has entered into an agreement with electronics manufacturer Foxconn that will see its devices manufactured at a local facility in the SriCity SEZ near Chennai.

But the report goes on to say that the plan for local production has been delayed due to certification issues and OnePlus’ first made in India devices will only hit the market by mid-to-late January.
