With about six weeks left before the deadline for the first phase of digitisation, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has said that 68 per cent cable television digitisation has been achieved in the top four metros — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.

According to a statement by the Ministry, there are an estimated 103.76 lakh households in the four metros.

Nearly 80 per cent of these (nearly 82.59 lakh households) have television sets. The Ministry said that nearly 25.59 lakh households are already digitised as they have DTH connections.

“Adding 20 per cent provision for multiple TVs and offices, total 68.40 lakh cable subscribers need to get set-top boxes in four metros. Out of these, and 46.71 lakh households have already installed cable set-top boxes (STBs). Thus, 68 per cent of the TV households in the above mentioned cities have already become digital. The percentage achievement of digitisation goes up to 77 per cent if DTH figures of 25.59 lakh are also added,” the Ministry said in a statement.
