BMW has launched the latest generation of its popular hatchback Mini Cooper, powered by diesel engines, in India. The new Mini Cooper D has been launched in five- and three-door options, priced at ₹31.85 lakh and ₹35.20 lakh, respectively.

“On one hand, we had to create a vehicle that exceeds the demands of modern, 21st century motoring. On the other, we had to stay true to the original Mini and a design philosophy that has laid the foundations for over 50 years of success,” said BMW Group India President Philipp von Sahr, launching the models here in Mumbai.

For the first time in its history, the company has launched its five-door version.

“Minis as small cars are very personal and individual. It’s a premium car, and we know a lot of customers interested in this (the five-door coupe),” von Sahr added.

BMW, which assembles eight models at its factory in Chennai, is shipping the cars from its Oxford facility in the UK as completely built-up (CBU) units.

The company will introduce its Mini Cooper S three-door in India in the first quarter of 2015.

BMW had introduced Mini as a premium brand in India in 2012 and sold 302 units between May and December and sold 418 units in 2013. Since 2001, the company has sold 2.5 million cars worldwide. The company, which has four outlets in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, will set up another one in Chennai next year, he added.
