GE Healthcare ties up with UE Lifesciences to launch breast cancer-detection device

GE Healthcare has partnered with UE Lifesciences, a start-up, to come up with a handheld device that detects breast cancer.

Easy to use

Mihir Shah, founder and CEO, UE Lifesciences, said that the device is painless, radiation-free and does not need specialised doctors to operate it.

“Primary healthcare workers, apart from obstetricians and gynecologists, can use the device,” he added. UE Lifesciences has had investments from Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairperson and Managing Director, Biocon, and Ranjan Pai, Chairman, Manipal Education and Medical Group.

As per this partnership, GE Healthcare will sell this device as part of its global portfolio of breast-health products, which include mammography and ultrasound devices.

Breast cancer in India

According to estimates, breast cancer is the most frequent cause of cancer globaly with 1.67 million new cases. India sees around 1.5-lakh cases of breast cancer every year, and a large majority of these cases are detected at a later stage, which increases healthcare costs, said Terri Bresenham, President and CEO, GE Healthcare Sustainable Healthcare Solutions.

Shaw said that this is an opportunity to make a difference to the lives of millions of women.
